Trans Joy – Baby Trans

Trans Joy is a weekly blog series celebrating the positive side of trans experiences, in an attempt to bring some balance to contemporary trans discourses. This week I’m talking about baby trans.

For those who don’t know, baby trans refers to people who are just starting to explore their gender and finding their place under the trans umbrella. These aren’t necessarily young people, I’ve known baby trans who are considerably older than me. And being a part of that period of self-discovery can be a privilege, and a truly amazing experience.

Being openly trans (and a different body type to what is typically thought of as non-binary) I have had people see in me the freedom to define their identity on their own terms (I have been directly told this before). I think in part this is due to the platform I have to talk about these topics as a performer. I love to see the impact I can have as an artist, activist, and openly queer person.

But recently I’ve been supporting someone through this in a far more intensive way. Over the last few months my boyfriend Quinn has begun to explore hir gender identity. And I feel so lucky to have been part of that process. Seeing someone that i love light up the first time i used hir new pronouns is profoundly beautiful, a memory that I will treasure for the rest of my life.

Beyond these countless moments of joyous discovery it has been amazing to watch hir grow. Ze has become so much more comfortable with hir identity and how ze looks. Seeing that confidence grow as Quinn finds the space ze wants to claim as hir own is incredible. It’s a reminder that, as much as being trans can be tough, finding that euphoria after a lifetime without it has a fierce joy. And being a part of that process for Quinn is one of the best things I’ve ever done.

I hope you all find some joy this week too ❤ If you want to contribute to this project then please get in touch 🙂

I write about whatever captures my attention, focussing on my personal experiences. I'm mostly interested in gender, sexuality, and mental health. My experiences are shaped by being pansexual, polyamorous, non-binary, depressed, an intersectional feminist, and active in the BDSM community.
